Overview of the area "Topics" related to geology

What does stratigraphy deal with? What count as industrial minerals? Can CO2 emissions be stored underground? Who can enforce claims on mineral resources? You will find a lot of information on geologically relevant questions on the Topics pages of the Geology Portal. In addition: contact addresses, databases and useful tools.

Mineral resources

New blocks of sandstone in the quarry.

Mineral resources form the basis for practically all everyday objects – from toothpaste to mobile phones, from paper to PC. Here you will find basic information on ores and industrial minerals, on topics such as mining or natural resource monitoring.

Geological hazards

Nature is beautiful - but it can also be dangerous: Natural phenomena, which have causes in the Earth’s interior or near the surface of the Earth, can result in natural disasters. Examples include volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides and floods.

Energy

Gas flare in Finsterwald: With this natural gas well in Entlebuch, in 1980 this became, to this day, the only commercially used gas deposit of Switzerland.

Switzerland, in terms of energy resources, has a high per capita consumption. Fossil fuels such as fuel oil and petroleum fuels make up the largest portion of that. Here you will find out more – also about geothermal energy, the energy source with great future potential.

Planning for the future

Research work in the Mont Terri rock laboratory.

Knowledge of geology is important when making decisions for the sustainable use and development of the natural environment. Experts compile hazard analyses, investigate potential landfill sites and take a stand on issues of environmental protection, energy production and resource extraction.
